#253 Daisy

Ink and watercolor, about 9" x 6".  It's a rainy day again, so I painted a little bouquet of daisy, red coral bells, and rock rose.

#252 Promise

I craved the solace of art today, and found some time to do this collage.  It's all ink or watercolor on printmaking papers, 12" x 10".

#251 Bay and Sky

This is sumi ink and Inktense pencil on paper- 8" x 9".
I'm slipping on the daily posting concept.  Maybe every other day is more doable in the summer.

#250 Hay Bales

I had a quarter sheet of grey printmaking paper, and painted part of it with sumi ink and drew with the black Inktense pencil.  The combination reminds me of the look of an etching/aquatint.  I was also going to use white pastel on it for highlights but decided not to do that- maybe on a different painting.

#248 West Light

This is a sumi ink and liquid watercolor painting on masa paper- about 11" x 14".  It's based on a photo I took in October on the Quillayute river, in that low, clear light of late afternoon. The shadows were very dark.

#247 Desert Sketch

I almost didn't post this, because it's just a quick sketch in inks.  But then, I've been derelict in posting lately, so.... here is this scene from Lava Beds National Monument (photo reference mine).  You can tell that the masa paper was taped to a wrapped linen panel, because the texture telegraphed through.  This time of year is busy- I wish I had more time for artwork!

#246 Collage with Green Bear and Pen

I was playing around with inks and masa paper, and made this collage.  Afterwards, it looked like a green bear was in the lower left and a pen was headed its way.

scheduling

Um, it seems more difficult to do a daily painting or drawing during the summer.  I'll try to do something new tomorrow.  In the meantime, R suggested I tell an anecdote.

So here is one- two days ago I walked into a house built in 1973 and it had a wet bar immediately inside the front door.  It was before the coat closet, even, and there was vinyl flooring in the area.  The 70's must have been pretty stressful if people had to burst in the front door and shakily pour themselves a drink before taking off their coats.  Oh, and there was mirrored wallpaper with velvet flecks behind the bar.  I picture the homeowner of 1973 as sporting sideburns, and a large belt buckle.

#244 Stream on Masa

This is one of the paintings I did in Sheila Sondik's workshop (see previous posts), in which sumi ink was painted on crumpled masa paper and then flattened out by adhering it to heavy watercolor paper.

#243 Wild Rhodies

At risk of painting something that might look like bed linens, I tried doing some wild rhodies in inks and watercolor.  If you are a northwesterner, you know that in the deep forest, a shaft of light on some rhodies is almost blinding.

#242 Stream in Black and Aqua

Which reminds me, there is another one from the workshop to post.  This one was done today with sumi ink and aqua liquid watercolor. About 11" x 12".

#241 Yellow Willow

There is a beautiful willow towards the end of Sequim Bay Road that I have tried to paint a few times.  This is an attempt in sumi ink, on a very old piece of Asian printmaking paper - not sure which kind.  I wanted to really emphasize the willow, so tried the Inktense pencils on just it...

I had the paper and even a sumi brush for years, but incredibly, never tried them with sumi ink.  I LOVE this medium.

#240 Woods on Masa

I took my last ink painting of the day yesterday, and adhered it to a gallery wrap canvas that had already been painted an ochre color- then made a few more touches here and there.  The rough tearing on the edges was sort of an experiment.  16"square.
