#103 Brass Cup

With other stuff... acrylic on 6" x 6" panel.  I used winter landscape colors for an indoor painting.

#102 Low Light

Really more of a sketch... of the low winter light on an afternoon on the west side of the peninsula. Marking pen/acrylic on paper, 8" x 11".

#101 Panforte and Apple

Burgundy apple and chocolate panforte.  This was fun because I used the scraper tool and some ink markers along with the acrylic paint, on a 6" x 6" panel.  Hmmm, now the panforte is just sitting there...

#100 High Desert

Now we're getting somewhere!  Lava Beds National Monument, in this case.  Acrylic with ink markers on paper, 12" x 16".   I need to get a few more marker colors besides black, dark brown, and deep orange.

#99 In Moses Coulee

The interesting thing is that when I was at this location, there didn't seem to be anything to paint.  I changed some photos into black and white, and it was easier to see the possibilities.  Ink and acrylic on paper, 7" x 11".

#98 Still Life with Bear

Stuffed bear, dictionary, and fish salt shaker, perilously close to cute.  Ink on paper, 9" x 9".

#97 Found Art 5

This is the last of my current Found Art series of photos from Fort Worden, and it's my favorite.  Tomorrow is a painting day!

#96 Ink Coast

Ink and acrylic on paper, 6"x6".  I'm trying to get more darks in the drawing/painting.  On a different topic, I'm making coq-au-vin for the first time.  It has a great aroma...

#94 Scree and Wash

An odd name, but from a photo of a cliff along the Columbia River.  A recent painting by Robin Weiss inspired me to look at my Eastern Washington images again.  Ink/acrylic on paper, about 8" x 8".

#93 Frog Fountain

The frog fountains next to the pond.  Ink, and an eensy bit of white acrylic on paper.  About 7" x 12".

#92 Found Art 3 and 4

I like this found art, from an old door at Fort Worden, partly because it looks like a figure is strolling or skiing in the upper right corner.

This image from a concrete wall has true winter colors. And maybe that's Old Man Winter's face on the left?

#91 Double Totem

I did this from the parking lot of the S'Klallam Tribal Center this morning.  Hopefully it won't offend anyone that the poles are just sketched in and not meticulously copied!  There was a Thunderbird at the top of the right pole, whom you can't see here. Ink/acrylic on paper, 7" x 7".

Also, more 'found art' photos will be posted soon.

#90.5 Found Art 2

Another image found on the battery walls at Fort Worden.

#90 Found Art 1

Sometimes what already exists is as nice as anyone can intentionally create.  These are photos of old concrete walls at Fort Worden that have been painted in graffiti and then again painted over by park employees- numerous times.  Besides the paint, there is precipitation from the concrete and iron.  I didn't change the colors, but may have rotated an image.

#89 Strait West

Winter on the western part of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Ink and acrylic on paper, 6" x 6".

#88 Greek Hat

Not everyone is thrilled with this sketch... but there was no opposition to posting!  6"x6" ink on paper.

#87.5 Webster's Woods

I couldn't resist putting a quick glaze of transparent acrylics on the middle foliage to darken and unify it.  The little figures in the foreground are called "The Leaners", and were sculpted by Viva Jones.

#87 Webster's Woods Sketch

I sketched these sculptures in Webster's Woods this morning, with inktense pencils and ink pens, water and brush. Webster's Woods is the sculpture garden of Port Angeles Fine Arts Center.  While I sketched, R took photos.... to be seen soon!

#86.5 Olden

These are not examples of great art, but this drawing thing with pens is pure fun.

#86 High Rider Ducky

The theme of today's still life is buoyancy.  I went to a lecture last night by Dr. Curtiss Ebbesmeyer about the flotsam from the Japanese earthquake in March 2011.  He said that most agencies are expecting the flotsam to arrive on Washington beaches in a year or so because they are calculating drift time due to currents alone.  If you calculate drift with wind, however, it is a much shorter time- about 8-9 months for objects that have a lot of surface area above the water line.  In fact, fishing floats are already appearing on Washington beaches that he suspects are from the tsunami's effects.  The items pictured above are not from Japan (recently anyway), but they would float. Mixed media, 6" x 8" on paper.

#85 Conference

It looks like the onion and the zucchini are conferring, while the other fruits and vegetables are carefully not paying attention - except maybe the delicata, which is straining to eavesdrop past the persimmon.  This is mixed media; I've been looking at the Urban Sketchers' work and their use of pen, pencil, etc, and was inspired to try something different.  6" x 8", on paper.

#84 Sequim in December

I could pretend that Sequim is this sunny every day in December...  but it is frequently sunny.  This is a view seen in town earlier today.  Acrylic on paper, 6" x 9".

#83 Candle Holder

I should probably never post an image that requires an explanation, but... this is a candle holder that friends gave us a few years ago, in its fantasy environment.  Acrylic on paper 6" x 6".

#82 Lunar Eclipse

I saw this morning's eclipse at about 6 am, and painted this 2 hours later.  For nice photos of the eclipse, see R's blog.  Acrylic on paper, 6"x6".

#81 Buddha under the DogWood

He can reflect on the fallen dogwood leaves, into the winter.  Acrylic on 6"x6" panel.

#80 Winter View

For some reason, in the northwest, we call this kind of day"gray."  This is looking up the driveway past the apple tree.  Acrylic on 6"x6" panel.

#79 Hanging Committee

expertly hanging R's photographs!  Thanks to R for letting me use his photo for this painting.   Acrylic on 6"x6" panel.

#78 Persimmon and Plate

A Japanese persimmon on a painted Middle Eastern brass plate- somehow they were right for each other.   Acrylic on 6"x6".

#77 Cider and Cookies

Last night a friend brought over a Mandarine Napoleon brandy to add to the unsweetened cider - a special treat. Acrylic on 6" x 6" panel.

#76 Wenatchee River

This is the Wenatchee River near Cashmere, Washington, in September.  If you go at that time, you might want to stop at the fruit stands to try the fresh harvest apples, and dried apple crisps.  Acrylic on 5" x 5" panel.

#74 Strait North

Here's a view from Fort Worden, looking north, and painted using a photo for reference.  Acrylic on 5"x5" panel.

BTW, there are 5 of these daily paintings (and one plein air) in local shows.  The 3 at the Sequim Arts show are Mountain Hike (Oct 2nd), Village Street (49), and Estuary Edge (36).  The two daily paintings at Northwind in Port Townsend are The Stoic Iron (61), and Clay Street (38). The plein air, which I have not posted yet, is an oil painting- 8"x10" canvas panel. Both shows run until the end of December.

#73 Creamer

This is inspired by Lisa Daria's paintings of a sugar bowl. She does beautiful paintings, with interesting brushwork. Acrylic on 5"x5" panel.

#72 Aah, Sunshine

This Quimper Arts model looked like he should be standing in sunlight, and it's certainly pouring in.    Acrylic on paper, 11"x8".

#71 Wooden Camels

In the Valley of the Satsumas.  Next time, maybe I will try for a simpler subject...  Acrylic on 6"x6" panel.

#70 Daffodils at Jim's

I painted these at Jim Norton's barn today, while he hosted the Weather-or-Not painters (note that we painted inside).   Acrylic on 6"x6" panel.

#69 Nutmeg

Freshly grated nutmeg, and a jar of cinnamon. For me, this painting is also about trying to allow the items to fit in to their painty surroundings.  Acrylic on 6"x6" panel.

#68 Butter

Following Cats, I had a request to paint Rats, but chose Fats.  Butter and oil.  Acrylic on 5"x5" panel.
(for a serious butter painting, look at this  - thanks to Lindy)!

And speaking of Cats, I repainted the surroundings because they seemed too pale last night:

#67 Cats

It was just a matter of time before they got themselves painted.  Acrylic on 6"x6" panel.

#66 Cherry Cheesecake

Happy Thanksgiving!  This is actually a low-fat, ricotta cheese pie, but we can pretend it's cheesecake.   The cherries are cherries.  Acrylic on 5"x5" panel.

#65 Pampas Plumes

I won't be going to the Quimper figure session today, so I painted an outside view instead.  We planted these so-called dwarf pampas grasses a few years ago, and the plumes are 9-10 feet tall.  They only last a few months, so we just enjoy them while they're there.  Acrylic on 5"x5" panel.

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

#64 Popcorn

I bought this organic popcorn at Nash's farm store out in Dungeness.  It's so good, it doesn't even need any topping or salt!   Acrylic on 5"x5" panel.

Monday, November 21, 2011

#63 Purple Door

This is an alley in Port Angeles that was spruced up last year by volunteers- they painted some of the buildings a variety of colors.  It's a cool spot.  Acrylic on 6"x6" panel.

Sunday, November 20, 2011

#62 Whale and Marbles

Little brass whale, marbles, cardboard box, glass, paper napkin. Oh, and air.  Acrylic on 5" x 7" panel.

#61 The Stoic Iron

This iron looks ready to do any job- if only it were asked!  Oil on 6"x6" panel.

#60 Veggies

This painting went through so many incarnations- the bag of onions is the only part that stayed constant.  Let's see, there was a German stein, some apples, a vase with flowers, the cabbage was in a different place, and there were puffy clouds.  Tomorrow I'm going back to a 6" x 6" !  This is oil on canvas panel, 8"x10".

#59 Turkey Shaker

This painting got a little more colorful than I planned, but the turkey looks happy.  Oil on 6" x 6" panel.
