#339 Blyn Sky

Another oil, and another repainting of a previous acrylic that didn't have enough value contrast originally.  6"x 6".

#338 Ex-Lake Aldwell (oil)

An oil painting of what used to be Lake Aldwell, after the dam was blown up.  It's based on a plein air acrylic painting done last year. 6" x 6".

#337 10:08

This started out its existence as a marker sketch on paper.  But then I had some time on my hands, much like this man on the Star Princess.

#336 Liliuokalani Park

This probably doesn't look much like the usual Hawaiian view, but it's a park in HIlo. Acrylic on paper, with pencil, 7" x 10".

#335 Tired

I sketched a woman on the evening of  "formal night" on the cruise, after dinner.  She looked a little tired, but I liked her orange dress and yellow flower.  This is based on that sketch- acrylic on paper, 10" x 7".

#334 December Sky

I did this a few days ago, while watching a changing sky.  It was done digitally, in contrast to my recently-posted images, which started with a sketch on paper.

#333 Pool Ladder Line

I sketched this man separately, but he seemed to fit well in the first image above.

#332 White Cup

I don't think this man was actually crushing his coffee cup, at the coffee bar, on the promenade deck.

#331 Koi

This is a photo taken of a koi pond in Lahaina, Maui.  I thought about doing a painting of it, but the photo seems to be enough!

#330 Serious Man

Maybe he wasn't really feeling serious.  He was also sitting on the pool deck.

#329 Woman in Crowd

I took a photo of the patrons of the House Without a Key, in Honolulu, and based this drawing on one of the women in the photo.  We didn't see Charlie Chan anywhere, but this woman looked mysterious.   Roger has more info about the place.

#328 Pool Deck 3

This man was totally napping, on the pool deck of the Star Princess.

Saturday, December 15, 2012

#327 Pool Deck 2

From the covered pool area of the Star Princess.  It was difficult to sketch undetected on the ship!

#326 More Life Drawing

Here are two other digital drawings/paintings from the Quimper life drawing session on Weds.  These were 20 minute poses, so there was enough time to use a variety of Elements tools.

Tomorrow, it's back to the pool deck sketches...

#325 Quimper Arts Model

I went to the Quimper Arts figure drawing session yesterday, and did a number of digital drawings/paintings there.  I used a Wacom Bamboo pad connected to a laptop, a pressure sensitive brush tool for the line drawing, and added color with the basic brush tool.  This was a ten-minute pose, which is maybe the minimum time needed for computer life drawing!  In the 2.5 and 5 minute poses, I fumbled through most of the time setting up a file and selecting tools.
(That's a tattoo on her shoulder).

#323 Observer

This man was watching a card game.  Some of the digital color is transparent and some is opaque.  I kind of like leaving the perfectly round shapes of the brush- it shows how it was colored.

#322 Ping Pong Match Viewer

This tall man was watching a ping pong game, so he was standing still for at least a few minutes.

#320 2 Disparate Sketches

I had the chance to sketch people in the last few weeks- but very quickly in order to escape notice.  Just one marker was used on site and I added color later. These two people have no connection except they were in the same room.

Short Break

I will be taking a break in posting of about 2 weeks.  Today's post is just a photo of an eagle that showed up yesterday when I was trying to feed seagulls some old bread.  I called for the seagulls, and immediately two eagles showed up.  They must have mistaken 'eagles' for 'seagulls'!

#319 Yellow Shrub

This went through a lot of changes because it's an imaginary scene, based on the fall colors I've been seeing on the north Olympic Peninsula.  Oil on board, 5" x 5".

#318 Still Life with Blueberry Jar

This is oil, 5" x 5"- a small repeat of the previous painting subject.  It started out more realistic but I was diverted by color. The image might be a little out of focus - will redo it tomorrow when it's light.

#317 Still LIfe with Coffee Pot

Last night a painting friend told me that he sometimes paints in oils without solvents.  He has brushes that are reserved for dark, medium, and light values, and dips them in vegetable oil/ wipes them to change colors.  I tried it and it works, but this one wasn't planned out as much as maybe it could have been.  OIl on panel 9" x 12".

#316 Deconstruction/Reconstruction

I found a cute house on Google Street View in Bremmerton, and did a little value study in ink.  It was boring.  So then I did an image where only the shadows were blocked in, followed by doing it again looking only at the paper and not the reference, caring more about the balance of darks than whether it looked like a house.  Finally I loaded the image onto the computer and added some highlights, color, and house-ish details.  It was a lot more fun this way, at least.

#315 30 Minute Sketch

There's only so much one can do with markers and a single figure in a small drawing space, so after the model was sketched in, more of the room was added. I concentrated on the main sketcher guy, with his teal jacket hanging on the sketching seat/whatever.  The room was full of concentration, by the model and individual sketchers, so a number of people got sketched and added.  I liked leaving them in different sizes because they were each in their own worlds anyway.  One got duplicated in the digital phase of image development. Maybe she was concentrating more than the others.

#315 15 Minute Poses

These are from two 15 minute poses at Quimper Arts.  Their morning schedule features short poses and the afternoon session, which I missed, features longer poses.  But tomorrow you will see a 30 minute sketch... not like these, exactly....

#314 2 Minutes Each

I actually don't know if these were two or three minute poses!  I just sketched until the timer went off, at the Quimper Arts figure drawing session this morning.  Two colors of markers (gray and brown), then the color was added digitally.

#314 Another Sketch of Borrego Springs

I wanted to mix the ink pencils and acrylics so that the ink lines would stay visible, and chose a previous oil painting of Borrego Springs to work with. 7" x 10".

#313 North of Kathy's

It was warm enough to paint outside today!  This is a building north of Kathy's place, in November sunlight.  Acrylic on watercolor paper, 7.5" x 7.5".

#312 On Water Street

I'm painting these New Brunswick scenes to submit for the Virtual Paintout.  I just learned about it- every month features a designated country viewed through Google Street View.  Acrylic, about 8" square.

#311 North of Britain Street

An acrylic painting of a scene in Saint John's, New Brunswick- for something completely different. (I painted out the dark boxes Nov 2nd). Ink and acrylic.

#310 Japanese Maple on Halloween

For the last few days I've been working on a large acrylic painting of this tree, with a gray sky.  Today, the sun came out and the tree was so beautiful that I decided to post a (non-enhanced) picture of it.  As you can see, it shades the half-buried greenhouse.  Maybe more practical people would cut it down, but that would just haunt me.  Happy Halloween-ing!

#309 Kathy and Lemons

Kathy in her studio, painting a still life onto a small canvas. It was a great painting day, although some of us were worried about friends or family on the east coast.

#308 Haughty Camel

I missed painting apples with the PT group, so in a pale imitation of the experience I put some apples and an asian pear in a basket and set a haughty ceramic camel nearby.

#307 Collaged Fall Scene

The previous painting seemed insipid so I changed it into a collage, and used ink and watercolor crayons to draw lines and push the values.  Same size!

#306 Autumn Tree

From a photo taken about a year ago on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula. W/C, with w/c crayons, 12x16.

#305 Oregon Farm

I first painted this farm in summer, using oil paints.  It seemed like a good subject for watercolor, and I decided to leave the sky white as if it were a rainy, bright overcast day.  About 6" x 9".

#304 Smoke Tree on Lawrence

A smoke tree, in a pot, on Lawrence Street, in uptown Port Townsend. W/C on masa paper.

#303 Big Valley

This is a bigger w/c- about 14 x 22, and on rice paper. That's not a tube black, but it looks like it.

Monday, October 15, 2012

#302 PT Street in September

Another watercolor on rice paper- about 11" x 15", based on a photo of a Port Townsend street in late summer.

Sunday, October 14, 2012

#301 Dungeness on Rice

It could have been crab risotto, with this name, but instead it's a watercolor of the Dungeness river on "rice" paper.  I did two wcs today- this was the first and more loose one. I'll definitely use this paper more often.

Saturday, October 13, 2012

#300 Poplar Curve

I decided to concentrate on the poplars along the path.  7" x 7", w/c and ink.

#299 First Rain

Watercolor plus the orange Inktense pencil sitting on the drawing table.  I looked across the bay, on the first day of rain this fall, before walking to the studio.

#298 Old Lava

A studio painting of Lava Beds...watercolor and ink pen, 6" x 9".
